Evaluation Q4: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Feedback Of Music Video:

In terms Of my music video I have learned a lot and my audience feedback, however I did show my video to a forced audience and not my target audience. As i did not show my music video to my intended audience then that may have effected their feedback. The main aspect I would change for my music video is the performance from me and the rest of my band as with the establishing shot we looked bored as we did not know what to do. Next time I would want to make a plan and tell the band members what they can do so they are just not sitting there distracting the performance. One thing we could do is give them a directed script that they must follow. I also learned a lot from how effective it seemed especially with the black and white made it look effective.

Digipack and Advert Feedback:

For my digipack I did not learn as much as I did with my video as the feedback for my digipack was strong I feel that I used the photos well and the theme of instruments made my product I think have a s strong link. I also think for my digipack my intended audience will like it as it should fit there interest. The use of colours of the text and name of the band was used well with the photos of the instruments and the text being clear by using 'impact' so it is a clear read. I think and my audience feel worked well and sends a clear message especially on my advert as I wanted to send a clear message I.E. the tour dates and the out now are clear so my audience will know when they can buy the album and see RunRate live.

Evaluation Q3: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stage?

For this unit of my coursework I used multiple programmes and many technological devices. All of the technological devices and programmes I used I found essential to produce my media project. The programmes and devices was used for different things in terms of production planning and evaluation stages of my coursework.

Stage one planning: In order to do a plan for our digipack we first had to
know what sort of music video we wanted to produce. We wanted to make a music video for the indie genre so we had to get inspiration for ideas for our video so we went on google and went to you tube to get inspiration. We found Kings of Leon music video very inspiring for our music video especially the backstage feel to the video.

Internet: When I was in YouTube I paid attention to the aspects of Kings of Leon music video Red Morning Light where I looked at aspects like variety's of close ups so i know how many close ups to put in my video. I also looked at the comments from the users of YouTube to see what they liked as fans so i could emulate what they think in my video.

In the planning stage we also had to produce an animatic for a digital storyboard of what our music video will entail. once we produced this animatic we had to show our teachers and the rest of our class to see if that thought it could work. Kirsty Produced the animatic in Movie maker. In Movie maker Kirsty created the animatic which was a visual story board of our music video plan.

By using the Internet like YouTube it helped me see what people thought of indie videos and see what is in an indie video which will help me make mine as effective as possible.

Stage Two Production: In the production stage of our music video is where i used most of the technology. As I was filming and producing a digipack and advert i had to use multiple technologies devices like brand new HD cameras and photoshop.

Brand New HD Video Cameras: When i was filming we had to use HD video cameras to film our music video. In order to use this video camera you have to have tutorials of how to do it but with experience from filming in As we did not need one. On this video camera we could get the angles  we needed and would also film it on the memory cards that is in the video camera and when we produce our video we would need a video drive to save it on and a card read to read the memory cards for the mac.

By using the The HD cameras it enabled me to film an effective music video of high quality.
Final Cut Pro: Final cut pro is probably what i spent most of time as i used it to edit my music video and to make a voice over for evaluation question one and question two. As final cut pro is a programme used for editing and as it is for editing we would have to use multiple tools like markers which would be crucial for a music video as it has to be in sync and snapping as it will have to a smooth edit. Also as it is a music video we could also use special effects that would suite our genre.

When we was using final cut pro we only really used one special effect which was to make it look black and white or desaturate on final cut pro. we wanted to use this to make it look like a behind the scenes footage which is used in Kings of Leon Red Morning Light. to do this you have to go to video filters and then scroll down to image control and then desaturate and it will remove the colour and make it black and white and give the home footage effect.

Also In final cut pro we had to change the speed of our music video as some of the black and white footage we wanted to slow it down as that would appear within our genre and by doing this it makes it look affective and makes it look like a real music video we do this by going to modify and change speed tool where we slowed it down.

We also used transitions before and after the black and white footage and we done this by going to video transitions and put in a transition so the black and white looked affective and you could see the change to make it a clear edit.
By using final cut pro it helped me produce a music video that had all the aspects of real music video and it helped me make a video that had the write cuts and had the right effects like black and white to create the backstage footage and home video effect.

Photoshop: Also in the production stage we had to use photoshop for our digipack and advert as that is how you create it. On photoshop I could use many different tools like the image tool to make it black and white. I made my front panel and the inside of my digipack black and white and the background of my digipack too. You can also put text on photoshop which I done for three panels of my digipack and on my advert. As well as cropping images.

By using photoshop I could create a digipack and advert that would stand out and catch my intended audience attention and try and create a digipack that they would be interested in buying and an advert that would promote the band successfully.

Internet:digipack as I wanted to use the Mod target and in order to use this target in my digipack I would have to get it off google and use it in photoshop where i would magic wand it and paste it in my digipack and advert. I also used google for my evaluation as well with getting some pictures for it.
By using google and the Internet it helped my in most of stages as with google i could get pictures for my blog to make it look interesting and stand out and it would be essential to use pictures in my evaluation as i wanted to use media technology to its full and google helped me do this.

Stage three Evaluation: My evaluation had to be done over blogger. On blogger i can post my work and do my evaluation and use media technology at its best as you can import videos, pictures and writing what i have done in this evaluation. I have also used blogger all the way through out my course work for all three stages; Planning, Production and evaluation.

Blogger was very helpful for me as i could post updates and do my evaluation on time. Also with blogger i could make it as interesting as possible by having the use of videos pictures and text.

Evaluation Q2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text and advert?

I think my audience will be able to see the like between my digipack and advert as they will be connected to my product as a whole as i have tried to fit to their interest i.e. using instruments in my product heavily as they will be attracted to it. I think my target audience will be attracted to my digipack and advert as with the digipack they will want to buy it as they are getting something extra especially with the use of pictures and band members names makes my digipack unique. I also feel they will like my digipack with the heavily use of instruments and as my product is in the indie genre my target audience will be musicians themselves and will appreciate the use of guitars and amps.

My target audience will also be attracted to my advert as it fits there interest with the use of instruments and image of my digipack. Also on my advert it is promoting the tour which my target audience will be very interested in as they will want to see my band live as they are fans and will want to find out where they are playing and when they are playing. On the advert it also said when the album is out and they will be interested in that as they will like the songs and my music video they will want to go out and buy the album. I think as a combined product my target audience will be very interested as it will fit there needs and interests.

Production: Photos for digipack

For my final didgipack I wanted to choose pictures that had the indie vibe and that would go well with my band and as a final product. I also wanted to carry out a particular theme and that was to have instuments and the colour and my logo.

Planning: Fonts and coulor

For my digipack i wanted to create a digipack with clear images fonts and colour that go with my genre of indie. Clear fonts and coulor is part of the rules that we should follow in order to create a good digipack and a good product as it must be easily read i.e. the clear text and to have a stiking coulor will also catch the audience attenstion and will result in them buying the digipack. There are many fonts that i could had used in my final digipack here are some of them:

RunRate
RunRate
RunRate

I decided to use the first one as it was my favourite and I thought it was clear and easy to read and I thought it would be seen on an indie album.
I wanted to have four coulors throught out my digipack. As i found the mod sign as inspiring for me and wanted to use it as a logo for my band i wanted to stick to the coulors of blue, red and white which are also the coulors of the great britan flag which i thought went well seeing as RunRate are a british Artic Monkeys what people say i am thats what im not use this coulor for there pictures in the inside.

Planning: Mock Ups

In order to be able to create our digipak we had to produce a mock up and show our teachers they then showed us what was good with our mock ups and what was bad. The whole idea of producing a mock up is that if anything goes wrong then it will not effect our final mark and we can try to follow the rules for the digipak. I believe that my mock up was effective because it made me think of how i am going to produce a digipak and what it will consist off. As our film and band are indie i wanted to create and Indie digipak and i felt the best way to create this was to have a digipak that mainly consisted of instruments which will go with our genre and to have effective and appropriate coloring.

planning: Do''s and Dont's

In order to make a successful digipak we was giving some rules that we must stick to in order to achieve a good quality digipak. These rules should help us gain the marks we need and if we stick to these rules then our final product could work and be successful. the list of Do's and Dont's our as followed:

Do's:
  • Use a clear font.
  • Use appropriate sizes for fonts and images.
  • Use clear photos that are in focus.
  • Use photos that are an appropriate shape for the page.
  • Use a layout that follows the rule of thirds for the composition.
  • Use an appropriate type face that follows genre conventions and a house style.
  • Be careful where you place the font it must follow genre conventions and be clear from a distance.
  • Follow the conventions of the three colour rule that is appropriate for images, font and background.
  • think carefully about how you use and integrate font text and languages and image.
  • Use appropriate industry logos and conventions properly positioned Barcode, Date, Copyright, Titles, Artist name.
Dont's:
  • Stretch images. this will make them out of focus.
  • Use layer styles.
  • Use unnecessary effects. Any effects used must suite the genre.
  • Place text across the artist face.
  • Use a font simply because you like it.
  • Feel you need a separate photo on every panel- be creative.
I feel that if i can achieve all of the Do's and try and stay away from the Dont's then i feel i can make a successful digipak as these rules are crucial guidelines to follow.

Inspiration

For my Digipak i wanted to use the below Logo of the classic Mod logo used by the who and of course the mods. Both the Mods and The Who have references to Indie and Rock and i thought by using this logo it would create a Indie feeling and to be known as a British Band as this logo has references to Britain's with the colours of the British flag red white and blue.

Analyse of Three Digipaks

The Kooks Digipak Inside  In The Inside Out was one digipak that i found both interesting and inspirational for my own digipak and i also believe it fits with both my category of Indie and would be bought by the same audience who will buy mine as The Kooks and my band are both an Indie band.

What I like about this digipak is the feeling for both instruments and the closeness of the band by just hanging out with instruments. the reason why i like this is because for me and my group we wanted to create the feeling of both us writing our own music and have a love for music I.E. the instruments will be used heavily in my digipak and also the jamming as it will support my music video and the digipak of the band hanging out.

Arctic Monkeys Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not:

The reason why I like this digipak is different to the reason why i like the Kooks Digipak is because with this one it still manages to create the feeling of Indie but is different towards The Kooks as this one is more creative with the theme of smoke which i could use in mine as you could say smoking is a symbol of a classic Indie band.

The theme of smoking with the CD looking like an ashtray and the front cover of the artist smoking a cigarette for me is both very affective and creates the Indie vibe and i could use it in my digipak.

The who Greatest Hits Digipak:

I found my third  idea of inspiration in a old band but who are also rock. even though The Who are not seen as a Indie style band i still think my audience will buy this album and be interested in this band. the reason why i like this digipak is because i like the black and white theme like for Arctic Monkeys which help to create the Indie vibe. but apart from the colour scheme i also like the image of Great Britain Flag flying at the bottom which shows it is a British band which i like as in our video we used the theme of London so this idea could work as a good combination of both Indie and English band.

Production: Rough Cut.

There are a few things that we need to change in terms of editing from the feedback given by the teachers. These are:
1. Keeping the same transitions constant, at various points there are fades from black where there  shouldn't be.
2. Some clips need to be cut a few seconds earlier as they begin to zoom in at times.
3. A fade should be used to start and finish the music video.
4. In some shots the instruments aren't in time with the music or they aren't being played at all, they need to be put in sync.

Filmimg: Day Two/Three

For our second and third day of filming we decided to film the band jamming at Michael's house to get the real home video affect as we have decided to do it in black and white to create this affect. there are some problems that we faced when filming the jamming, as we wanted to know what exactly we wanted to film. In order to make it look affective we decided to use Miss En Scene appropriately by getting instruments like Guitar and  keyboard and Drum sticks with also sweets crisp and of course every indie bands favourite a bottle of Jack Daniels.

For the third day of filmimg me and Kirst decided to get some footage of London landmarks like Big Ben, London Eye and Piccadilly Circus. We decided to film these locations and use them in our music video to show that we are an English band starting off to get the real sense of being an English band. We decided what locations we would film before we went out so we did not really face many problems apart from the fact that it could have rained but luckily it did not.

Planning Main Location

For our music Video we wanted to create an indie vibe and to make our music video look affective. As we are a new up and coming band we decided to film at the Roundhouse as the rooms are small and would be the ideal place where our sort of band would play. Kirsty Phillips and Michael Lewry went to the roundhouse to get permission to film there and to see if it was okay if we could film there with 6 people in the room at one time.

We thought the Roundhouse would be the ideal place to film as the room was very small and as we are a new and up and coming band we decided that a small room like this would be where our band will play there song as they will not be that famous. Also by the room being small it creates an indie vibe and makes it look like a real music video which is the whole point.

Describing the initial ideas for digipak and advertisements.

My initial ideas for my digipak is I would either get a big picture of the band or the lead singer and put some effects on it like black and white or something else that would make it have the indie vibe. However for the cover that goes on the CD I want to do something creative like cigarettes buts that make it look like an ash tray like Arctic Monkeys album ‘Whatever people say I am I’m not’  I will not however use this idea but maybe have pictures of different instruments or loads of mini stills from the video. I think I may produce a 6 or an 8 digipak to gain more marks. By having these sorts of ideas I believe that it will create the indie effect and therefore meet my target audience and will get interested in it.
Also in my digipak I will have a poster of the band. to make it a unique item for fans of the band to have to put up on there bedroom wall.
I will also advertise my digipak on the Internet to connect and reach my target audience and hopefully reach a wider audience as so many people use the Internet. I may also decide to advertise over the radio for music fans.

Planning : Pitch 13,14 and 15

13.For our 3 products we plan to use digital technology by doing a radio interview of the band to promote this single of shooting star to get across to their audience and to increase sales. Also we was planning on posting on facebook of our single to and advertise maybe on the Artist Facebook page to get across to their fans as only their fans will be able to see this page and will go out and buy this single.
14.We have used conventions of real media text like radio interviews, digipacks which real music artist use. The difference between all these three are the digipack will be what people actually buy and i want to do something creative with an indie twist and the rest are actual advertisements to get the single out to the public.
15.In A2 we have looked at production in a different way to A level because in A level we was looking at prediction of films and this is usually done in big budgets so the production like adverting would be everywhere. However with music video we are looking to advertise on the radio unlike film, also unlike film and A level at As we are looking to do a digipack and look to advertise online and of course produce a music video.

Production: Filiming Day One.

Our first filming day went really well, we filmed all shots and angles that we felt would do the performance aspect of the music video justice. Even though the performance space was on the small side, we thought that it still looked pretty effective and puts the band where it is at in the world of music - forthcoming. Without having looked back at the footage, the only problem we have encountered so far was the dropping out of the drummer at the very last minute, and so we had to get George to play the drums with no experience. Above are a few of the photos we took while on shoot. some could possibly be used in digipaks and adverts.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard that we had to do to show how we plan to make our video work and what sort of shots we plan to use in our video.

Planning: Storyboard

This is the final storyboard that we have come up with and will be the main basis of the production of music video.
