Analysing Previous Student Videos

For this, in class we watched different videos that were made by previous students from City and Islington College.
The one who stood out for me was the first video we watched - the one where the girl made it all by her self. I thought it was really good, and the song was catchy too. Even though she wasn't in the video, it was still very effective. I especially liked the way she edited it - it was so cleverly done, linkning the two stories together, but merging into the next scene. Even at times, when it was dark, you could still see what was going on, and that you'd understand the story.

For our A2 Media studies, we are marked on the following:
-holding shot ready where appropriate.
-framing shot appropriately.
-variety of shot distances.
-material appropriate.
-appropriate mise-en-scene.
-editing to make meaning clear
-varied shot transitions.
-using sound with iamges and editing appropriately.

If we do this, then w're looking at a level 4 - which eould be B to A gardes. :)

Going back to the former student's work: at the beginning, when the girl woalks towards the camera, she starts talking to her boyfriend. However, there was an empty Mcdonald's cup. It was so distracting, because she filmed it in the dark, and to have a white cup, it stands out, which drew your attention to the cup, and not to the actual thing that's happening. But, even though there was minor distractions, overall, I honestly think it's a very good video, and is very realistic, and looks like a professional music video clip.
There was a lot of guiter solos in the music, so by the guy playing the guiter, it gave more of an effect and that because it was indie, it gave the indie vibe a good gist to it.

To make a good music video, I think you have to have good technical skills, and editing, which I think she didn very well. The choice of music was in so much sync, that you unterstood the story -  that the girl rejected her boyfriend, lying to him, when she's meeting up with another guy. it's not loyal.

Watching this, it makes me think of the things I should be careful on my group as well. Little mise-en-scene is a big part of it, so if it's not suppose to be there, then it ruin the whole clip - or just dat scene.

Examples and anaylsis of videos that follow amplification, illustration and disjuncture.

Amplification: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zJv5qLsLYoo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zJv5qLsLYoo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
This shows that even though is shows whats happening, there's a much deeper meaning to it.

This shows that it doesn't really have a connection with the lyrics and video.

Summary of the main key points of Andrew Goodwin's theory.

The main points of Andrew Goodwin are that most genres have a meaning.
For example, when it comes to pop videos, he says that it must build up to a climax, and then just resolves. There's always a story.
Andrew's main points in a musci video is:
Illustration: where the movements fit in with what the person is singing - like Duffy's Warwick Avenue, where she's singing about leaving a partner, and it's very clear in the clip.
Amplification: It's where the's a meaning, but not going with what the song is on about, but you can still understand it.
Disjuncture: where there is little connection between the lyric or video or where the video contradicts the lyric.

Goodwin also says that sometimes, music video goes beyond the meaning and that it can promote a film as well.
He says that in pop, for example, females are shown as objects to a males desire, normally wearing skimpy clothing - mini skirts, high heels and normally wearing very minial clothing - their bodies are shown off. This is also common in R'n'B videos as well.
However, in pop, sometimes the female singer - Beyonce or Madonna for example - show off their bodies to males, wearing sexy clothes as well. However, they ususally look back at the camera to the viewers to show that they are powerful and that it makes them look passive.

Goodwin says that music should relate to all ages - young and old, because depending on what they listen yo, they can relate to it, and remember it in the long run.

Another thing is that sometimes, videos can be linked to a film, to promote both the video and the film - for example: Take That' Rule the world for Stardust.

Request Of Copy Write clearance

Before we could start to actually make our music videos we was requested that we contact the artist of the songs record label and ask for copy write permission.

To : astralwerks@astralwerks.net
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am requesting a copy write clearance to use either part or all of the songs 'sway and always where I need to be' by the Kooks.

I am a student at City and Islington  College where I am studying Media and for our coursework we have to work in a group and produce a music video and a promotional package for the release of the new album. I would like to request if I can use the above songs for this project.

I stress that by the end of this project the package will not be made publicly but only for educational purposes and the Holder of the original copy write will be fully acknowledged at the end of the coursework. If you do not hold the writes to this song i would very much appreciate it if you send this email on to the holder of the copy write or send me their details and i will ask them directly.

Yours Faithfully
George Jackson.

Review of previous student video

In this lesson me and my class looked at previous music videos that was from previous City and Islington students. One video that will always stick out in my mind was a music video on the song naive by the The Kooks. This video to me was very impressive as it was done by only one female student. This student is not seen on camera, even though the performances within this video is good for me it is not why it stood out from the rest.

For our Music video for A2 Media Studies we are marked on various technical things:
  • Holding shot steady where appropriate.
  • Framing shot appropriately.
  • Variety of shot distances.
  • Material appropriate.
  • Appropriate mis-en-scene.
  • Editing to make a meaning clear.
  • Varied shot transitions.
  • Using sound with images and editing appropriately.
If you use all or most of these technical skills in your music video you will gain a very high level 4 which is a B-A grade and as this film achieved that this is why for me it stands out.

This music video of naive is done by The Kooks a British indie band. I believe this video supports the genre with the dim lights and the effect of black and white on the artist and with the mis-en-scene of the guitar gives the video the indie vibe. The editing for me was one of the reasons why this video got a very high grade as it was achieved to a high level. One edit that I will remember is a fade in and fade out of the artist to a different shot position and this edit made the video look authentic. This video also had appropriate framing and a variety of shot distances and shots it also consisted of a lot of close ups which both fit the marketing criteria and helps it look like a real music video.

Even though I really enjoyed this music video there was some flaws to it. like for instance, the very first image we see is of a blond girl in the street on a phone and behind her in the background is a McDonald's cup and this piece of mis-en-scene distracts you from looking at the girl. however I feel the rest of the mis-en-scene is used well like; the location.

I believe that what makes a good music video is the good use of technical skills which is clearly shown in this video, but the representation and the narrative has to make sense. Now for me I feel the narrative was reasonably easy to understand of the girl cheating on the artist. However at the end of this video you see the artist meet a boy in a hoodie, I thought it was the same boy (the artist) but I had to clarify with my teacher who told me it was not the same boy and if there is not a clear understanding of who this boy is then the ending does not work. Any problem could be resolved and this one could have been resolved by the boy taking down his hood and it would have made a clearer picture.

These mistakes are not big and vital ones, and this video for me is still worthy of the grade, just because the editing is done well and looks authentic but also because this video is represented well. The girl cheating on the boy makes women represented in a negative light as unfaithful.

Research: Review of Previous Students Work.

There are many different aspects to consider when planning and producing a music video, but there are certain aspects of which are expected to be followed and used:

- Holding shot steady where appropriate
- Framing shot appropriately
- Variety of shot distances
- Material is appropriate
- Appropriate mise-en-scene
- Editing to make meaning clear
- Varied shot transactions
- Using sound with images and editing appropriately

To give us an insight into how to address these aspects we were shown a range of highly graded work of previous years to illustrate how they are all needed to create a successful music video. Out of all of the videos shown the one I enjoyed the most and, I think, applied to majority if the aspects of the above list was of the song 'Naive' by The Kooks. The Kooks are an indie band and aim there music at a general music loving audience, as a fan of their music i am aware they do seem to attract a younger section of society, maybe between 13 - 25. Conventionally their music video are a mixture performance and narrative forms and typically in black and white.

The student who produced her own version of the naive video seemed to have take on the conventions that apply to other videos of the kooks and other artists of the same genre of music. The video appears to have been well planned out and well thought about before production. This is clear through the narrative within the video. It shows a woman to be turning down a visit from her boyfriend, she thinks up an excuse and makes her way to another man. This narrative is interrupted by a performance by who we assume is the artist. The lyrics seem to link directly to the performance and narrative within the video.

What makes the video good and pleasurable to watch id the use of editing. Compared to the simplicity of the rest of the video the editing used is very complex. A number of dissolves and other transitions used and the cutting is generally on the beat of the song. The video is fairly balanced between performance and the narrative and this add extra emotion to song. The video gives a clear representation of male and female and in some ways conforms to some stereotypes: that women are unfaithful and will do all that they can to hide things. Where as the man is seen as hurt and a loving person.

Research: Who was Vladmir Propp?

Vladmir Propp was a Russian scholar of who analysed folk tale/fairy tales to his own narrative structure. He broke down sentence structure and used his analysis to create a narrative form made up of four 'spheres' and 31 stages. By analysing types of characters and kinds of action, Propp was able to arrive at the conclusion that there were thirty-one generic narrative units in the Russian folk tale. Whilst not all stories will contain all of Propp's narrative units, it is surprising to find stories that contain none, and many modern books and movies fit into his categories. Propp also analysed characters to come to the conclusion of eight character types. Propps narrative structure had been criticised lack of sensitivity to subtle story elements such as mood and deeper context. His theory can be applied to the following music videos:

With both music videos it is the narrative, rather than the performance parts of each video which fit into many sections sections of Propp's narrative theory. the stages that stand out to me the most in both videos are number eight "villain or lack" both show the desire of an object  they don't already have or have lost. Number twelve "first function of donor" and for only the Florence and the Machine video twenty six "solution."

      Lip Sync tutorial

In this lesson me and my Group learnt how to make a music video and to put in practise of making a lip sync and a video to go along with this new key skill. In this lesson I learnt a lot about making a good music video and picked up key skills such as framing has to be important, as we made the crucial era of making our camera to far away from the two singers as they appeared to look small where as in all music video the artist look big as close ups are important with framing.

When making this music video we found that is we hard to learn all the words and learnt that our video did not look that good because of the location and with our location we tried to make it look as good as possible. When you are in a classroom it is hard to achieve this. Also we found it hard using a still camera as last year we was use to using a tripod and made it easier for us to film. When making a music video we found it hard thinking of what angels we should use and how we can make them look affective.

On final cut pro I learnt how to syncing  a song by putting a M which stands for marker and when you put the marker on the song where you want to sync it the video should go with the soundtrack and then you have to match up all the marker in line from video and soundtrack to create a mime.

Editing a music video and Editing a thriller title sequence seem to be different even though they are using the exactly  same equipment called final cut pro but with music videos you have to use Markers to know where you want to use your soundtrack as starting point to help you sync the video and create a successful mime. Also with music videos you use the snapping a lot more as you want to create little clips to keep the edit at a fast rate to make it look like a music video where as in the thriller title sequence you would use the napping a lot less as you will want the clips to be longer to create tension and build up suspense.

Examples of Amplfication, Illustration and Disjuncture

      Disjuncture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iym7xO3-dz4&ob=av2n
this video is Micheal Jackson man in the mirror and the video does not go with the song but has a deeper meaning of the world should change.

      Illustration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZv62ShoStY&ob=av3e
this video of Cha Cha slide goes with the lyrics as the dance moves are seen within the video and go with the lyrics.

      Amplification: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS9OO0S5w2k
This video of YMCA tells the story's of the lyrics as the dance moves but i think has a deeper meaning as i believe there are deeper meanings.

      Andrew Goodwins theory

Andrew Goodwin sees music videos in many different ways and different genres have the different styles like for example a traditional pop video relies on repetition like for example the pop video will usually go with the lyrics and with this use of repetition with the lyrics we get familiarised with the video and the genre the music video is in. Also Andrew Goodwin says that music videos are like story's especially with in the pop genre as it must end with a build up to a climax to the end of the song and the video before the video will slowly melt away.

Andrew Goodwin also says that music videos are used to go beyond the original meaning with a song promoting a film. Andrew Goodwin also saids that there are mainly three types of music videos which are:
Illustration: where the video goes with the lyrics usually seen in pop videos like Lilly Allen smile where its about a relationship and shows the man and the women and shows pictures which goes with the lyrics.
Amplification: when the music video suggest new meaning which do not go with the lyrics but can be understood.
Disjuncture: This is where there is little between the lyric and the video and can be contradict.

Andrew Goodwin also says  that typical hip hop videos make women look as if they are only with-in the music video for the male sex objects as they are usually wearing bikinis or short items of clothes where they are showing a lot of skin to try and make them look sexy for the male artist and the camera. artist such as Madonna and beyonce who are female artist also make themselves look sexy by wearing little clothes also to achieve sex appeal but by them looking straight down the camera which makes them look as if they are looking straight back at the viewer which makes them look passive.

According to Andrew Goodwin music videos are meant to appeal to a wide range of audience like a song for example an old band would show videos of them in there young days where they can relate to the older generation as they will remember it and can relate to it.

Finally songs that come from a film like Armageddon or Titanic with songs like 'My heart will go on' and 'I don't wanna miss a thing' will have clips from the film in the music video.

      Analysis of Music Video

      http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dizzee+rascal+holiday&aq=2
This Dizze Rascal video of 'Holiday' the genre is R and B with this video portraying the classic representations of women as sex objects who are in the video to be looked at as looking sexy, good looking and attractive to look at. where the men are represented as the superior gender as the women are dancing for the men in there bikinis and Dizzie Rascal the artist is in a suite.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm69M3jtZl4&ob=av2e
This video of Arctic Monkeys represent the Genre they are in as indie rock as the video is not produced of a high quality and is set in a studio which represent the rock and and indie style of the band as it is simple with a low budget compared to Dizzie Rascall 'Holiday' Video.

       http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZyTOROlo9E&ob=av2e
This Lilly Allen 'Smile' video is represented well and the video goes with the Lyrics of when Lilly Said "sat By myself all day" shows her sitting by herself in her bedroom and also when she said "ringing me up on the phone" shows a man walking down the street on the phone which goes with the lyrics and represents them.

      Planning: Lip Sync Tutorial

       Lip Sync Tutorial:

Through this activity I learned that the way the video is filmed is vital. Filming from all angles the whole way through the track isn't easy when trying to keep the continuity. A clip from one angle in one chorus showed the participants doing one movement but from another angle they were doing something else. This caused problems when editing. I also learned that a static camera in a music video doesnt always have a great effect. I also learned that framing is also vital, when the participants were moving around a lot they kept moving out of frame. I found using the space, lack of props and not being able to use a tripod particularly hard. The use of a plain and boring backdrops does little for the effect and quality of the video. They need a lot of planning and care taken to do the best possible.
Creating a music video requires the skill of being able to lip sync and to do that correctly and in time to the track a few new tools in final cut pro needed to be learned - these being the marker tool. This allows us to mark a certain word on the track, as well as on the video. When the same word is marked on both, the markers appear on the sequence and so lining them up together would mean that the track and video are in sync.
The editing of a music video differs quite a bit compared to that of the thriller films we made. One major difference being the lip syncing. Also the fact that the clips are the entire length of the song for each angle instead of a few clips for each shot like in the thrillers. The cuts made depend on where and what part of each of the clips you want to appear and what order you want them in. In some ways getting the editing right would probably take a lot of experimenting and undoing.

Analysis of a music of your choice or one studied in class, focusing on the 4 hey conceptsof narrative, genre, media language and representation. :)

      <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rrn6BbM0TRQ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rrn6BbM0TRQ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

In this video clip of Mcfly - 'party girl', the girls are wearing sexy clothes, showing the desire to men. Mcfly are wearing casual clothes, showing that they're normal - not 'wealthy'. However, they are showing that men are dominant and shows that they're the strong ones. there's parts when the camera shows big landscapes - country, showing that they are rich. When the girls come on, Mcfly are in a strip club.
However, when the video starts and throughout out clip, there's glipses on blood running down the guiter neck or drums, showing that it's invloving violence. Thoughout the clip, it's always showing Mcfly as a band playing, showing that they are the most important thing in the clip - especially with the close-ups of the faces too.
When Harry gets half naked with the girls, it still clearly shows that he's dominant and in control. They show the girls almost vunuable..
When certain words only come up, it's in red and surrounding it is this smokey cloud, suggesting that it's a misty piece and that it's  gothic - unclear of what's going to happen.
Harry is a 'vampire' through the clip, and shows the fangs alot. When Harry bites a girl, she's left with blood on her neck.
Then it goes to Dougie, where he too is half naked, but working out. then comes a girl in a suit sitting on him and dancing exotically. but then she burns becuase of the sunlight. There's an electric shock after that, throught the cables of the equipment, which suggests that something is going to happen, weirdly.
And it does. It shows that taht guys are now running away, and the girls are dominant, running afre them. It's a switch of role. This shows that women can be strong, and that men can be vunuable also.
At thr end, it shows Dougie trapped and there's a sound of clapping, whcih gives suspense...

the representation is that the men are normally dominant in most situations, but it can easily change. this shows that either one can be strong - not both.
the narrative shows the story about vampires and how they can turn to you. also, it shows how girls are pulled into things that they don't necessarily want to be in, but once in, it's not always a good thing.
the genre is about vampires, which would attract vampire fans - it doesnt mean that they like the band (pulls people in) and the status of men and women.
      :)

      Planning: Copyright Request.

In preparation of the production of our music videos we were required to request copyright permission from either a British artist or their record company.

      Domino Mart
      PO Box 47029
      London
      SW18 1WD
      UK

      Dear, Sir/Madame

Request for Copyright Permission to use part or whole of: “I bet that you look good on the dance floor” and “sun goes down” by Arctic Monkeys

I am a student of A Level Media Studies and for my Advanced Portfolio I will be working in a group to produce a promotional package for the release of a new album track.  I would like to request permission to use the above track for this project.

The finished project will not be made available publicly and will be used solely for coursework purposes.  The holder of the original copyright will be fully acknowledge in the finished project.

If you do not hold the rights for this song I should be grateful if you could forward this request to the appropriate person, or return it to me with the contact details in order that I might approach the copyright holder directly.

      Yours faithfully
      Kirsty Phillips

I also sent this letter to a number of record labels requesting the use of song by Florence and the Machine, YouMeAtSix, The Kooks, Ellie Goulding, Air Traffic and Paloma Faith.

Research: Examples of Illustration, Amplification & Disjuncture.

Music videos can be defined into three categories:

The music video to this song, at many points throughout shows an illustration of the lyrics. The lyrics "You said i must eat so many lemons" Is illustrated by the artist eating and surrounded by eaten lemons.

      Amplification: Village People-YMCA
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS9OO0S5w2k

The lyrics if this song are clearly amplified through dance - the participants all move themselves in the shapes of the letters 'YMCA'  when they're heard, all of the participants join in when 'YMCA' is said.

      Disjuncture: Paramore-Ignorance

There is no clear relationship between the lyrics and the video. The entire band are squeezed in a room performing and are performing on stage. If anything this collective scene is a contradiction of the title 'Ignornace'

      Research: Andrew Goodwin Task

'The Structure of Music Video - Rethinking Narrative Analysis'

Andrew Goodwin believes that the traditional narrative structures do not apply to pop music videos becuase these structures are created for the use of novels and films - music videos approach a different angle of narrative. His reasoning for different narrative structures are:
      1. Pop videos do not have traditional narrative structures (normailty-problem-resolution) because they are built around songs.
      2. The artist is used as a narrator as well as a participant.
      3. The attempt to involve the audience in the performance and the exaggeration of performance by the singer often looking into the camera.

The repetitious nature of pop videos means that the video will often repeat images to reflect the song, usually the chorus.  This will also mean that the Intertexualtiy of the music videos of this genre will have pre-established expectations  that people will become familiar with. They are repeated on Tv, radio, through film and advertisements, continuously making the song very familiar.
A music video will show the build up to climax or the constant repetition before fading away. This reflects the structure of music itself- the song must end and so pop videos have a form of closure and ending.

The music videos that accompany songs are totally non-relative. The illustration of a song will sometimes extend or add to the meaning of the song itself. The music is promoted by the pleasurable viewing, this will then lead to the repetition of viewing the video. Sometimes these songs are there for the purpose of promoting other media such as film, and so the relationship between song and music videos can be placed into three categories:
Illustration: The story of the lyrics is reflected clearly in the video, sometimes through dance to emphasise emotion.
Amplification: When the song is not condtradicted by the new layers of meaning added by the video.
Disjuncture: When there is little or no relationship between the lyric or the video or where it had become a contradiction.

The features of a music video are easily recognisable through the actions of artists that are a trademark of theirs, through the object of female sexualisation - mens desire for women and sex. The genres which this is could be said as a convention is heavy metal and hip hop. Though some female artists use themselves sexually to gain attention.
Some music videos are used to try to appeal to a wider audience by showing youthful images of an older band and by adding clips and images from movies if the song is used in the sound track.

      Research: Analysis of Music Video.

The music video for Ellie Goulding's Guns and Horses uses a number of techniques to create a clear sense of narrative, genre, representation and media language.

The narrative throughout the music video is not kept as a continuous linear or a non linear structure - its a mix of both. Through editing techniques, the music video follows Ellie Goulding journey through a forest scene. But frequently cuts to a non linear scene of Ellie Goulding and other participants of the music video. There does not seem to be a distinct reminiscent quality immediately, but the setting and lighting used could be used in a thriller or horror movie. It creates a weary and creepy kind of atmosphere. The costume and props used are also reminiscent of soliders with a modern twist. A state of equilibrium could be suggest, but as the video continues we are past the stage of disruption already and it could be made up of flashbacks. Ellie Goulding is a participant in the video, whist performing a dance routine as walking through the forest. But on many occasions she is also the narrator. The music video, in ways is an illustration of the title of the song but not so much the lyrics themselves. The video shows soldiers with weapons - guns - and are also with horses.

The genre is shown to us through a number of ways. The setting of the video isn't really one that i would associate with the pop genre of the song. But the themed nature of the video sort of gives the pop genre away, as it would be seen as a more fun type a genre. The costume in this video varies the artist is seen wearing casual and very simple clothing but the other participants are seen to be dressed in soldier outfits which have been modernized, which to me seem more theatrical more than the genre of pop. The lighting of the video throughout appears to be dark and gloomy, creating a tense and fearful atmosphere this does not really convey the genre. Bright lights and colours would be more pop genre. the only light seen is directly on Ellie Goulding throughout the video.

The video as a whole represents both females and males in a fairly neutral light. there seems to only be one obvious stereotype - the female participants are dressed to look sexy. There soldier costumes are quite revealing - they're wearing hot pants and fishnet stockings. Though the main artist isnt really exposed to any stereotype, as mention before she is dressed in quite causal clothing. Many other genre of video tend to use sexual stereotypes where this doesn't. Along side this representation of genre, there is a representation of anger/war through the use of the participants costume as well as through the probs they use. Plus the fact that the participants are supposed to be dead.

The use of editing to this music video creates a a fairly fast pace, with the use of obvious cutting between scenes, this could suggest the urgency of the war/fighting that the music video illustrates. Even though the editing is fast paced it seems as though some parts have been manipulated to seem slower. The same scenes seem to be edited so that they are repeated in a certain sequence. This could suggest a repetition in the lives of the participants or the repetition of the chorus of the song. The editing techniques used in this music video have a wondering effect on the audience, the quickness of the cutting to different scenes also creates some confusion - as the video progresses more scenes are added making the video more dynamic.
The editing seems very conventional of that of this genre and of many others - the rhythmic, quick tempo-ed track is accompanied by fast editing to keep the song flowing and exciting
