Andrew Goodwins theory

Andrew Goodwin sees music videos in many different ways and different genres have the different styles like for example a traditional pop video relies on repetition like for example the pop video will usually go with the lyrics and with this use of repetition with the lyrics we get familiarised with the video and the genre the music video is in. Also Andrew Goodwin says that music videos are like story's especially with in the pop genre as it must end with a build up to a climax to the end of the song and the video before the video will slowly melt away. 

Andrew Goodwin also says that music videos are used to go beyond the original meaning with a song promoting a film. Andrew Goodwin also saids that there are mainly three types of music videos which are:
Illustration: where the video goes with the lyrics usually seen in pop videos like Lilly Allen smile where its about a relationship and shows the man and the women and shows pictures which goes with the lyrics.
Amplification: when the music video suggest new meaning which do not go with the lyrics but can be understood.
Disjuncture: This is where there is little between the lyric and the video and can be contradict.

Andrew Goodwin also says  that typical hip hop videos make women look as if they are only with-in the music video for the male sex objects as they are usually wearing bikinis or short items of clothes where they are showing a lot of skin to try and make them look sexy for the male artist and the camera. artist such as Madonna and beyonce who are female artist also make themselves look sexy by wearing little clothes also to achieve sex appeal but by them looking straight down the camera which makes them look as if they are looking straight back at the viewer which makes them look passive.

According to Andrew Goodwin music videos are meant to appeal to a wide range of audience like a song for example an old band would show videos of them in there young days where they can relate to the older generation as they will remember it and can relate to it.

Finally songs that come from a film like Armageddon or Titanic with songs like 'My heart will go on' and 'I don't wanna miss a thing' will have clips from the film in the music video.
